How Does Dedicated Hosting Work?

When we speak of web hosting servers, there are three main varieties - shared web hosting web servers, VPS (virtual private hosting servers) and dedicated hosting servers. Shared hosting servers accommodate lots of customers and so the resources per account are restricted, virtual private server plans offer more server configuration freedom, but also affect other virtual private web servers on the hardware node if used rashly, and dedicated servers give you the independence to carry out everything you please without intervening with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated hosting server?

Dedicated servers are traditionally much more high-priced than shared web servers or virtual private web servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The answer is quite simple. If your company has a resource-absorbing web page, or simply has very explicit web server architecture requirements, the most sensible option is a dedicated server. For somebody who is willing to invest in safety and stability, the greater price is of no concern. You are granted complete root-level access and can utilize 100% of the dedicated server's resources without anyone else availing of these resources and intervening with your web portals.

Hardware specs

The majority of web hosting companies, incl. us at , provide several different hardware configurations you can pick from in keeping with your demands. The hardware architectures offer different sorts of microprocessors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and server hard drive sizes and different monthly traffic quotas. You can select a web hosting Control Panel, which is a handy GUI if you would like to use the server for hosting purposes only and choose not to use SSH for all the changes you will be making. We provide three kinds of hosting CP software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The hosting CP of your preference

If you are a confident Linux user (our dedicated hosting web servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated server via a Secure Shell tunnel only. That, however, could be inconvenient, especially if you decide to grant full root access to somebody else who has less technical experience than yourself. This is why having hosting CP software pre-activated is a clever idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP graphical user interface that we offer does not include root-level access and is mostly suitable for someone who runs plenty of online portals that absorb a lot of system resources, but wants to manage the web sites, databases and electronic mail aliases using a user-friendly hosting CP. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting CPs, on the other hand, grant full root-level access and offer 3 levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell web hosting packages rather than using the web hosting server just for yourself, you should pick one of these two.

Server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated hosting server and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your dedicated hosting web server, such as a non-responsive Apache or a network outage, it is useful to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated hosting server too. Backups are also an additional option - the web hosting supplier offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could choose a type of RAID that would allow you to have the very same data on two hard drives as a protective measure in case of a hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted complete root access deletes something accidentally.
